Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting using Semiconductor Electrodes: Fundamentals, Fabrications, Measurements and Analyses
|
<Abstract>
Photoelectrochemical(PEC) water splitting has attracted considerable interest due to its potential to generate sustainable hydrogen fuel from the clean and abundant resources. Up to date, great efforts have been made in the last several decades to enhance the efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen conversion by improving light absorption, carrier transport, and corrosion resistance of semiconductor electrodes.In this tutorial, I will provide an overview of fundamentals, design strategies, measurements, and analyses of PEC water splitting using semiconductor electrodes. Especially, I will focus on introducing recent progress and future directions in the researches of PEC water splitting using various nanomaterials and nanostructures.

Toward an Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Conversion: A Theoretical Perspective
|
<Abstract>
CO2 conversion is an essential technology to develop a sustainable carbon economy for the present and the future. Many studies have focused extensively on the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into various useful chemicals. However, there is not yet a solution sufficiently high enough efficiency and stability to demonstrate practical applicability. A key obstacle here is mostly due to the limited performance of the catalysts in terms of activity, stability, etc. To improve and tailor the catalytic properties, it is thus required to understand the operational mechanism of the various possible CO2 reduction pathways and identify the mechanistic role of catalysts. In this tutorial session, I will discuss the mechanistic difficulty imposed in the electrochemical reduction of CO2, and current research trends to overcome those intrinsic limitations of catalyst activities. I will then discuss the theoretical guidelines and catalyst design principles toward an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the CO2 reduction.
